Cupcakes and Confections

From a very early age, my father and I would sneak off from the rest of the family on secret missions. My dad had a legendary sweet tooth so nine out of ten times these stolen moments would find us at a sweets shop. My father's favorite destination was the donut shop that had been in business for over 60 years, we had to arrive early, as the warm powdered sugar ones were always the first to go. We would wake up before my mother and my siblings with utter anticipation of the smells and tastes that were yet to come. On our return we would surprise them with our treasures and we would all sit around the table delighting in the luxurious simplicity of fried dough and sugar. Throughout my life these adventures have continued, with family, with girlfriends and now especially with my children. Whether it is a trip to the ice cream store on a hot summer night or checking out the new cupcake place that everyone is raving about, I have seen the magic of sugar and how it can spin a moment into a celebration. I always serve some special dessert at every party I give, but recently have started to throw a "sweets" party where I treat the Birthday Girl or Soon To Be Bride as the treat that she is! I have usually done this party in browns and pinks (chocolates and strawberries) but customize it to suit the celebrant (maybe they are more pistachio!). I like to bundle small bouquets of roses on the table. On occasion, I have served a simple meal, like tea sandwiches and when appropriate Champagne or a dessert wine is a great addition to this party but without, it is also is a great kid's birthday. Any which way you choose to do this party it is a sweet for your sweet.
